Funny story – well, to me. This was the first song I wrote for Brass Farthing, although it was intended for the neo-folk group 5 Cent Coffee. It was written about how I met my wife, Alyscia, from the perspective of our friend, Zak. You see, at the time we met, Zak was dating Alyscia, along with other people. And Zak is very pretty. I’m all right. So, the short of it – Alyscia and I click at our first meeting at a magic show. I also had a girlfriend at the time, so not much came of it at first. Then Zak was going away to Boston. The day before he left, I asked if it would be cool if Alyscia and I hung out. He said, “That’s funny. She asked the same thing about you.” Score!

Lyrics:

I don't know why
You left me
For somebody who's uglier than me.
I don't know why
You left me
For somebody who's willing to get
Down on one knee

Well
He may be funny
He may have money
He treats you nice and
He calls you honey

He's quite polite and
He thinks you're right
He takes you out
Every Saturday night
But you can only kiss him
When you turn out the light
Oh why did you take him instead of me?

I don't know why
You left me
For somebody who's uglier than me.
I don't know why
You left me
For somebody who you can barely
Stand to see

Oh
He's so smart
Knows works of art
And truly cares
About your heart
He may be kind
He's quite divine
He sure is swell
There's no denyin'
But every night you pray to God
"Please make me go blind!"

Oh why did you take him instead of me?

(Instrumental)

I don't know why
You left me
For somebody who's uglier than me
I don't know why
You left me
For somebody who pays the rent and
Sings in key

It's true that
I can't sing and
I can't dance and
I don't know
About romance

I drink too much and
Smoke cigars
I don't go out
Except to bars
And I don't really care about
Where you are

Oh why did you take him instead of me?
